Eighty mile beach

A few days R & R at Eighty Mile Beach was just what we needed. We had a wonderful home cooked roast courtesy of Gwen & Ian (thank you).

We were lucky enough to be there when a team of scientists were releasing 8 flat backed turtles which they had collected in early January as hatchlings. They have been fitted with satellite transmitters to hopefully track where they go. Apparantly not much is known about these turtles and the american scientist in charge of the program was very excited.

Steve was suitably impressed with the amphibious boat used to take the turtles 4km out to sea away from inshore predators. That evening the scientists did a presentation on the program which was very interesting. We will be able to track the turtles on the internet. The transmitters will fall off within 1/3 months. The tracking site can be found on the link http://www.seaturtle.org/tracking/?project_id=1074

The rest of the time was spent with Steve TRYING to catch a fish and a spot of shell collecting by myself.
